The Better Future Coalition will be holding a public meeting at 6.30pm, Tuesday, 29 September at Balmain Town Hall to discuss the massive development proposal put forward by NSW Government for our public land at Bays West.
The Premier Chris Minns and Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne have an unwarranted vision for Bays West, a densely packed SUBURB with 8,500 high-rise flats and units. That’s NOT what was proposed during the years of consultation and planning for the publicly owned Bays Precinct.
Three speakers will discuss this wasted opportunity.
Judy Mundey is a long-time feminist activist and public housing campaigner. She and her late husband Jack Mundey spearheaded campaigns to protect public space from bad developments.
Eddie Ma is a local architect in Marrickville and housing advocate who works directly with not-for-profit housing providers to deliver social and affordable housing. He is a member of the Inner West Council’s Housing for All Democracy Group.
John Stamolis is a statistician, local campaigner and former independent councillor on Inner West Council.
John Stamolis says “This is public land being handed over to private developers with absolutely no civic vision or control. We have not been consulted about the plan to build high-rise apartments on our inner-city harbour foreshores. It is insulting that the only consultation that the Premier wants is a naming competition. We are shocked at the scale of development which is 1,500 dwellings more than Pyrmont in a much smaller area.”
Not only has there been no consultation, we do not know where this plan has come from. Bays West is a rare opportunity to plan the inner-city harbour foreshores for the future of our global city. Our harbour foreshores are the most important land in Sydney. This is the land most shared by the people of Sydney and the millions who visit here.
As we open up our foreshores for public use and enjoyment we open up the great potential of our harbour city. What other opportunities do we have for this incredible foreshore location? We intend to get this discussion going.
